24th of September : global march in favor of wild animals

marche-mondiale-animauxOn Saturday, the 24th of September, protests will occur everywhere around the World.

Originally dedicated to elephants, tigers and rhinoceros, this global march is extended to every animal facing the threat of extinction.

6th mass extinction

Thousands of species are about to gradually disappear if we don’t plan on taking action. Stanford, Princeton and Berkeley scientists are even starting to mention the beginning of a 6th mass extinction. Overfishing, the destruction of natural habitats,  poaching and illegal trade are mainly to blame.

It’s a fact, animal species are disappearing a hundred times faster than before. Currently, the IUCN red list, recently updated, counts more than 73 686 threatened species of which 22 103 close to worldwide extinction. These numbers apply to 41% of amphibians, 13% of birds and 25% of mammals.

It is now imperative to raise awareness of this decline and to think about a course of action designed in order to preserve our planet’s biodiversity ; we cannot wait any longer to undertake actions that aim at the protection and preservation of animal species.

The 17th meeting of the Conference of Parties

From the 14th of September to the 5th of October, Johannesburg will welcome the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).  The purpose of the CITES is to ensure that the internationnal trade of animals and plants specimens doesn’t threaten the survival of their respective species. Illegal trade is the main aggravating factor regarding the extinction of several species such as Elephants, Rhinoceros, Pangolins, gorillas and turtles.

Important decisions will be made during this this conference. The African Elephant Coalition, among others, is planning to submit five proposals in order to end the ivory trade.

Take part in the march

The march will take place on the same day as the beginning of the Conference and provides an opportunity to show our enthusiasm regarding  the matter of animals’ protection.
