The human being and the animal: 2 different biological models
The origin of animal testing relies on the similarities between the human being and the animal. It is yet known that these tests are irrelevant and are dangerous according to various scientists like the Scientific Committee Pro Anima or Antidote Europe.
A lot of products that have actually been tested on animals, revealed to be useless on the human being if not dangerous which could have secondary effects or causing death. As proof, iatrogenic diseases, that means the state or the secondary effects have been caused by a treatment, represent the fourth cause of death in industrialized countries.
No species can be taken as a reliable biological model. 99% of deaths are caused by the aspirin, the morphine excites rats and cats whereas it calms down the human being, the arsenic has no effect on a sheep when sweet almond is fatal to foxes. Several medications, tested on animals and claimed to be harmless could lead to severe consequences on the human being. For instance, between 1957 to 1961, the Thalidomide, prescribed to pregnant women against nausea, has induced birth of thousands children with serious deformities.
Animal testing have become useless and costly in time and in money. Antidote Europe has for example highlighted that “the greatest medical discoveries have been made on clinical observation and epidemiology” especially on cardiovascular diseases (1st cause of death in developed countries).
Alternative methods: a road to scientific ethics
Scientists set up substitute methods that are less expensive and more worthy because we can use them directly on the human being.
It is important to mention that the main causes of death are linked to our own lifestyle: tobacco, alcohol, inactivity, nutrition, obesity, diabetes. In this instance, prevention is key to help us limit the risks.
It involves the use of growing human cell used on medical research. It is also about growing, studying cancer cells and testing chemical products.
Prevent cardiovascular diseases
Scientists have created a platform in which weak blood vessels can be fixed and enable factors or create cardiovascular diseases in order to study them in detail.
Micro-Synthetic device to test medicines
Researchers from the University of Harvard have created a chip stimulating the organ system. This chip is composed of several compartments in which human cells of various organs are connected thanks to small channels reproducing blood vessels. In the long term, researchers hope to connect the chips between them as to reproduce a living organism in its totality.
This technology could print in three dimension organs for transplants. It is indeed possible to produce muscles tissue and lungs from printing a paste containing human cells.
Animal tests can be replaced either in medical school or science classes. The University of Standford has created a virtual dissection table whereas on the 26th July, a new circular from the French ministry of National Education has prohibited dissection animal in Life Science classes. We can consider solutions to substitute the dissections: video material, simulation softwares, anatomical model.
In order to finance and help the development of ethics in research programs, Ethic Science is using fundraising. It supports, inter alia, 3 programs:
- The laboratory Oncotheis has conceived a three-dimensional in vitro tumours model from cells of patients. So, it is a single model of lung cancer in vitro. It is necessary to mention that lung cancer is the first cause of death. This program is in the pilot phase.
- For more information on Parkinson’s disease: an aid on scientific works from Professor Schwamborn. Jens Schwamborn uses the latest bioengineering technologies so that to find real solutions to this dreadful disease with his team, to understand and to know the treatment on Parkinson’s disease. In France, 150000 people have this disease. It is essential to support new research tools which do not imply tests on animals as in vivo experiment would not achieve meaningful advances concerning neurodegenerative diseases.
- Long term effects of using electronic cigarettes are unknown at the moment. The biotechnology company Ephiltelix has developed a model with small lungs reconstituted in vitro based on human cells. They reproduce original tissue characteristics to evaluate the potential toxicity of these cigarettes. Animal testing do not allow this experiment.
Valitox is an additional program managed by the Scientific committee Pro Anima. It evaluates the potential toxicity of a substance on the grow of human cells. This project might replace DL50 and CL50 tests on toxicology and ecotoxicology in the pharmaceutical, cosmetical, food, agrochemical and chemical substances fields.

Why do we still continue animal testing?
A legal protection for the pharmaceutical and chemical industries
Companies can not be sued if their products have been tested on animals beforehand in accordance with the law in case of death or incidents caused by chemical products or medicine. So, companies can not be held responsible.
Economical and professional interests
Animal testing are in the heart of an intense commercial activity including the selling of animal, food, restraint equipment. There are also economical and professional interests on animal tests. In the academic sciences, it is indeed essential to publish in order to have a career. In this respect, animal tests allow to take quickly an animal model already used, to modify some variables to get “new” datas that do not necessarily help the researches. Moreover, there is a lack of financial support in developing alternative methods. Finally, laziness is also an important factor that explains we are still doing animal tests. Scientists, who are used to these experiments, do not want to question their practices and their work. They prefer to do as they always do.
If the experiments keep happening, it is then not for their scientific interest.
In order to end the animal tests, we have to ACT
To stop useless tortures and animal testing once for all, you can oppose this practice by several ways:
BUILD AWARENESS AND INFORM YOUR ENTOURAGE
ASK TO CAMPAIGNS THAT ARE FINANCING THE VIVISECTION LIKE THE TELETHON TO ONLY SUPPORT RESEARCH METHODS WITHOUT ANIMALS
MAKE A DONATION TO ETHICSCIENCE FOR DEVELOPING AN ETHICAL RESEARCH AND THE 3 PROGRAMS PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED ON THIS ARTICLE
- BUY COSMETICS AND HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS WHERE YOU CAN FIND THE MENTION “ CRUELTY-FREE” OR ECO-LABELS
